The Story

From Challenge to Delivered Vises

The Challenge

Mining maintenance shops chew through tools; standard cast iron vises cracked under the work and corroded quickly in the environment. The supplier needed a spec that outlasted the equipment and a price that held for fleet volumes.

Our Solution

A forged-steel 10″ heavy-duty platform with a phosphate and powder coat finish, salt-spray tested, supplied through a fleet program with site-wise allocation and a reorder lane.

Controlled Delivery

Quality & Delivery Control Lines

Quality and Inspection Controls

Quality Basis:

Approved sample, technical specification, customer-approved BOM, artwork reference and packing requirements.

Inspection Focus:

  • Forged steel body integrity per unit
  • Jaw hardness verification (58-62 HRC)
  • Salt spray corrosion test per batch
  • Coating thickness and adhesion checks
  • Clamping force at 120% of rated capacity

Issue Control:

Non-conforming items were placed under controlled hold and re-inspected after approved corrective action.

Evidence:

Batch-level inspection records and packing checks retained by project, linked to the approved sample and specification.

Production and Delivery Controls

Planning Inputs:

Approved sample · final artwork · accessory configuration · packaging readiness · confirmed order quantity.

Milestones:

Sample approval → production release → production scheduling → final inspection → packing verification → shipment preparation.

Delivery Readiness:

SKU configuration, labeling, manuals, barcodes, carton marking and packing quantity verified before shipment release.

Outcome:

100 vises · 2 lots · fleet pricing · program extended.

Configuration

Customized Product Configuration

Elements defined, approved and locked with the client before production.

  • 10″ forged steel body for extreme service
  • Phosphate + powder coat corrosion-resistant finish
  • Site-wise allocation across two phased lots
  • Fleet pricing on combined volume
  • Spare jaw insert packs per site
  • Reorder lane on the locked specification

Process

How the Project Ran

  1. 1

    Site survey

Workload and environment set the forged steel + coating spec.

  2. 2

    Sample approval

Corrosion and clamping performance verified on a physical unit.

  3. 3

    Phased delivery

Two lots allocated per site usage and delivery timetable.

  4. 4

    Fleet support

Spare jaw inserts and a reorder lane on the same spec.

The Result

All 100 vises delivered in two phased lots with fleet pricing. Site feedback showed longer service life against the previous cast iron units, and the program was extended to additional sites.

Key Takeaways

What This Project Shows

  • Forged steel is the spec for shock-load and harsh environments, not a premium nicety.

  • A corrosion coating tested by salt spray earns its cost in mining conditions.

  • Fleet pricing plus a reorder lane converts a one-off buy into a managed program.

  • Phased lots keep capital spread while sites keep working.
