How a US tool retailer launched a private-label medium-duty bench vise program with custom paint, cast-in branding, and retail packaging.
A US tool retailer wanted to enter the bench vise category under its own brand without carrying a container's worth of inventory risk. The plan: a medium-duty line in 5" and 6" jaw widths, manufactured to North American workshop expectations, differentiated by a custom paint finish and the retailer's logo cast directly into the body.
Locking down the specification
The project specification was written around three things the retailer knew its customers expected: jaws that stay parallel under load, a smooth-acme closing mechanism, and a finish that survives garage humidity. HT200 cast iron bodies covered the cost base, and the 58–62 HRC hardened jaws and anvil came standard from our forged steel line. The custom colorway was chosen from the RAL range, formulated to photograph well on a shelf and to hold up in the retailer's online store imagery.
Brand casting and samples
Because the logo was to be cast in, a dedicated pattern was prepared for each jaw width. The sample cycle ran 10 days and included the cast-in logo, the custom paint, and a matching retail carton mock-up. The retailer approved the first sample with a single minor revision — a thicker handle grip knurling — which we applied the same week.
Production and retail packaging
Production ran 28 days for the combined 5" and 6" order at quantities in the standard private-label range. Each carton was printed with the retailer's branding, model name, and specification callouts, and barcoded GTINs were applied for the e-commerce channel. The pallets were configured for direct cross-dock through the retailer's DC rather than re-handling at a consolidation depot.
What the brand got
The retailer gained a private-label category leader with a distinctive look, competitive margins against national brands, and a supplier who handled the compliance paperwork — including the GDPR-relevant documentation and export filings — without the retailer needing an import desk in-house. The program is now in its second ordering cycle, with an expansion into a 6" heavy-duty model under discussion.
